In The Omnivore’s Dilemma reading for this week, I found a few things that caught my attention. First of all, Fritz Haber, the man that learned how to produce more nitrogen for plants also invented the gas that was used to kill Jews in concentration camps in WWII. Next was that Pollan compared America eating so much today with America drinking so much in the nineteenth century. Obesity is a major problem in the US, and I believe the author is making a point that we need to stop it, much like the legislature stopped the ongoing binge drinking when they introduced Prohibition.
The reading from They Say I Say covered summarizing and quoting others’ work. It states that when summarizing text it is required “that your own response exert a quiet influence” (31). I feel that I still need to work on this aspect of writing. As far as quoting goes, I felt that the explanations for quoting were basic and common sense.
